Now that my greenhouse has been scrubbed clean and the snap peas have been planted, I will need to reorganize the backyard shed to prepare for the gardening season ahead. Much like the garage, the backyard shed can be a dumping ground for more stuff so for all of you gardeners on the Sunshine Coast, here’s my reset checklist to a safe and efficient space this gardening season…
Shed Check ~ walk around the interior and exterior areas of the garden shed for any winter or pest related damage.
Check for trip hazards ~ who needs an injury before the season begins?!
- Pull everything out and sweep the floor.
- Secure garden tools on the wall via broom holder clips; tidy up hand tools in hanging pocket shelf.
- Clean, sharpen, lubricate gardening tools.
Tidy up Storage Areas
- Tidy up items stored on built-in and portable shelving as well as stackable storage bins. Check that fertilizer, grass seed, and other gardening related products are safely and securely stored.
- If you are in need of inexpensive shelving options, get yourself set up with the VarageSale App – there’s always someone parting with storage solutions online.
Do a Declutter
- By the end of the previous season, there is always a “collection” of stuff in my garden shed so with a “use it or lose it” mindset and to carve out some additional space, a declutter will be in the works.
- Chances are I’ll find stuff I can bless forward to new gardeners on the Sunshine Coast! Hello VarageSale App!
Take Inventory and Stock Up
- Check electric and fuel-based yard equipment is in good working order; complete any required maintenance
- Stock up on fuel, oil, or other yard maintenance supplies.
- Check stock on soil enhancement materials
Now the fun stuff begins….STARTING SEEDS!
- Shop early for best selection on seeds – seeds are in at your local nurseries, Home Hardware, Canadian Tire, etc. Join a seed exchange via One Straw Society and of course support Seedy Saturday events in your local community for more gardening inspiration!
- Use the Flip App to watch for sales on seed starting soil, bone meal, and anything else you need.
