One of my Mumsy’s favourite things to do was the laundry and the best part was hanging it all on a glorious wash line as much as the weather would permit her. Mum used to say that doing laundry was therapeutic – I’m sure she solved many of life’s problems over the years while hanging her wash! I haven’t fallen too far from Mumsy on this task ~ we have a twirldry clothes line which doesn’t take a whole lot of space and just before the weather turns in the fall, we can take it down and store it away.
After a hard day in the garden, taking down fresh smelling sheets and towels from the line is about as good as it gets. In the heat of summer, I’ll wash blankets and pillows and throw them on the line too. One of the best laundry tricks my mother taught me was how to keep whites white without using bleach ~ all you need is a few rainy days! Bathroom towels tend to turn a bit grey after a while, collars on white shirts need a reset, and who hasn’t tackled a wine stain on a tablecloth or lipstick on a cloth napkin? All I do is run it through a cold wash cycle then hang it on the line on a rainy day and leave it on the line for several rainy days. Then it goes back in the wash for a final clean and returned to the wash line to dry weather permitting of course.
I just cleaned the filter on my front load washer which is now on a self-clean cycle with a splash of white vinegar. It is so important to stay on top of the busiest appliance in your home which really makes a difference to your wash!
